KENDRA's
konference

When: 6-9 pm on Thursday, April 3rd, 2023

Where: St. John's-Ravenscourt School

Kendra's Konference is a conference organized by youth, for youth, with the goal of inspiring future generations by showing them what it is like being a medical professional, and why oncology and research are so important.

The conference is open to anyone who would like to attend. Kendra's Konference 2023 was held from 6 pm to 9 pm on Thursday, April 13th at SJR. We had a great turnout and fundraised over $1600 for CancerCare Manitoba from the night!

We were lucky enough to have three amazing speakers at the conference: two oncologists sharing their real-life experience in medicine and oncology, and a young woman sharing her inspiring story about surviving cancer as a teenager. See below for their bios.

Youth are the future doctors, researchers, philanthropists and more who will eventually lead the battle against cancer. We think that this conference is a very special opportunity to make a difference in the mindsets of many people and inspire a generation of individuals, each of whom may someday make a difference – whether that be by donating to CancerCare or making a breakthrough in cancer research – in the future.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Konference! We hope to see you all at future Konferences.

Hi! I am Isabella Consiglio and I’m a cancer survivor. When I was 17 I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Thanks to my amazing doctors and nurses I am now four years cancer free. I want to thank Kendra’s Konference for giving me the opportunity to share my story.

Dr. Geoff Cuvelier is a Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist and Section Head for the Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology-BMT at CancerCare Manitoba and the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital. Dr. Cuvelier treats children with cancer between 0-18 years of age and has a specialization in pediatric bone marrow transplantation. He is an active research physician with interests in complications of bone marrow transplant and immune deficiencies.

Dr. Geoff Cuvelier

Dr. Cuvelier is also one of the clinical-site leads for the cross-Canadian program known as PROFYLE (Precision Oncology for Young People). PROFYLE is a national program attempting to genetically profile the tumors of children with “hard to treat” cancers, where traditional therapies such as chemotherapy have not worked. One of the aims of PROFYLE is to find more personalized and targeted therapies for children and adolescents with hard to treat cancers. Kendra’s Walk has been a strong supporter of the PROFYLE program at CancerCare Manitoba.

Dr. Sapna Oberoi is a Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist at CCMB and Scientist at CCMR. Her research program focuses on enhancing symptom management, especially mental health and supportive care of children, adolescents, and young adults (AYAs) with cancer to improve their overall outcomes, cancer experience, and quality of life during and after their cancer treatment.

Dr. Sapna Oberoi

Her research involves engaging and partnering with qualitative approaches, and routinely collecting population- based administrative data. Addressing disparities in cancer care of children and AYAs with cancer is an essential goal of this research. Another important aspect of Dr. Oberoi’s research is to improve the outcomes of children and AYAs with sarcomas. She is a young investigator with the soft tissue sarcoma committee of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), currently working on several projects to improve the treatment and outcome of children and adolescents with soft-tissue sarcomas.
